And it seems TV bosses agree.

The ex-EastEnder is being brought in to add some glamour to The Bill, with a guest appearance in an episode due to be screened early next year.

The 26-year-old will play Ami Ryan, the screen fiancée of Josh Hunt, played by former Hollyoaks actor Barry Sloane.

Also starring in the episode, which began filming last week, is former Torchwood star Gareth David-Lloyd.
The plot has yet to be revealed - but it is believed to centre around a love triangle.

But all eyes were on Beyonce Knowles this afternoon at the qualifying for the Singapore Grand Prix.

Dressed in a F1 Rocks open-necked team shirt and hot pants with bright red lipstick, the singer brought more than a hint of glamour to proceedings.

She is in town to perform at the F1 Rocks with LG concert, and boost ticket sales for the event, which has been held from Thursday until tonight.

Her performance was due to spice up the second year of the Singapore Grand Prix night race.

Beyonce Knowles, 28, walked through the paddock at the Marina Bay Street Circuit with Anthony Hamilton, father of last year's champion, British driver Lewis Hamilton.

She met up with the McLaren driver and F1 boss Bernie Ecclestone, before embracing Hamilton's girlfriend, Nicole Scherzinger of the Pussycat Dolls.

Asked if she was an F1 fan, Knowles replied: 'Yes, I am, obviously.' But she declined to say who her favorite team was.

She is set to perform a gig in the country's capital Kuala Lumpur on October 25, but the planned gig angered Islamic extremists, who said that the star's sexy outfits and provocative dance routines are 'immoral'.

It is now claimed that the star will tone down some aspects of the gig so as not to anger people in the country, which is mostly Muslim.

Other singers such as Gwen Stefani have also toned down their shows while performing in Malaysia after being the subject of protest threats.

It may be for Ralph Lauren, but could these images of Kelly Brook technically be called a fashion shoot if it didn't feature any clothes?

Newly released images of the former Strictly Come Dancing star show her posing with nothing more than a pale pink hydrangea branch for the U.S. designer.

With tousled hair and sultry pout, the model, now 29, flaunted the figure for which she would become famous as presenter on The Big Breakfast alongside Johnny Vaughan.

But why the images from the shoot did not feature any clothes remains unclear. Perhaps Ralph Lauren had a little-known sideline in floristry, or maybe the stylist forgot to pack the products.

Ralph Lauren was not the only major brand to have spotted Kelly's potential so early on. Fosters and Renault also employed her for campaigns, while Triumph commissioned a special 5-foot billboard of her bust.

She has dedicated her life so far to fighting for her country, but tonight, lance corporal Katrina Hodge has a very different goal. The squaddie is to swop her camouflage gear for a bikini to compete alongside 50 other girls for the title of Miss England.

The accidental beauty queen was entered into the local heats in her hometown of Tunbridge Wells by a friend, and was stunned when she took the crown, winning herself entry into the Miss England race.

But despite touring Iraq and engaging in hand-to-hand combat in Basra, the 22-year-old, who has been decorated for her bravery, claims that the most frightening thing she has ever done is to take to the catwalk.

Katrina was awarded a commendation from her unit, the 1st Batallion, Royal Anglian Regiment for her actions during a posting in 2005 in Basra.

'Our vehicle rolled over and when I came round the Iraqi had escaped and had our weapons. I knew I had to do something or he would have shot us all dead. It was a real do or die moment.'

'My training just kicked in and I managed to disarm him, get the weapons back and restrain him.
But incredibly though, while Katrina casually describes her efforts to save her peers in Basra as just part of the job, her reaction to her turn on the catwalk is far less understated, incredibly describing it as her most terrifying challenge yet.

'To be honest, the scariest moment of my life was stepping onto a catwalk for the first time,' she told the Daily Star. 'It was so far out of my comfort zone. I was terrified'

In a beauty pageant first, Katrina is hoping to impress the judges with her fitness and dexterity with a gun.

'For the talent section I'm doing rifle drill and throwing myself through an assault course. It's the first time anyone has ever done anything like this for Miss England but I wanted to show off my Army skills.'

'It would also give me the chance to be able to encourage people to support the Forces. I really think British people need to be more patriotic and give more backing to the troops.

The Army made me who I am today and now I want to give something back. My main ambition if I won would be to promote the Forces and raise awareness of their charities.'

Aside from the support she might have earned for the troops, Katrina says she's pleased her achievements in the Miss England competition have given her the opportunity to show that Army girls can be feminine.

'People do think it's quite unusual for a soldier to be in a beauty pageant but I have had a really positive response, says Katrina.

A lot of people have got in contact with me as a result of entering Miss England because they've wanted to join the Army but they were too scared. They've thought it would be really butch and female-unfriendly.

But people have said I've inspired them to join up and that I've shown them how normal girly girls can succeed.

I think I'm showing that women in the Army can be pretty and girly but also that girls who enter beauty pageants don't have to be bimbos.

Some of the other Miss England girls are training to be lawyers and barristers. They're not dumb at all.'

The Poker Face singer, at least we think it's her, covered her face in something akin to a gimp mask at a press conference in Malta.

With just her nose and blonde curls visible, she teamed her mask with a figure-hugging, studded body suit and black gloves of different lengths.

But then, as Dolly Parton famously remarked: 'You'd be surprised how much it costs to look this cheap.'

If it was not being worn by Cheryl Cole, a delectable Geordie Tinkerbell, who is only 5ft 3in tall and takes a size four dress, it would undoubtedly look even worse than it does.

She has already started working with her for the auditions, which are being filmed for the new series, and will stay with her for the duration of the show.

Cheryl spends around £8,000 a year on her teeth, plus up to a further £1,500 a year on whitening treatments.

Adcock has also worked with Victoria Beckham and Christina Aguilera - and persuaded Cheryl to wear shift dresses, high-waisted trousers and classic blouses.

Adcock says: 'Cheryl does the ladylike look really well.'

Strachan provides Cheryl with all-out glamour.

Hailing from Blackpool, he worked with Kylie, putting her in feathers and sequins, and with Girls Aloud, providing them with black bondage-inspired corsets for their tour.

Cheryl's spokesman says: 'She dresses herself for The X Factor auditions, but when the show goes live a stylist comes on board. She does not use a stylist day-to-day.'

For both stylists she spends about £45,000 a year. Cheryl likes J Brand jeans and has a weakness for Louboutin shoes - she is rumoured to get both free.

She spent more than £100,000 on her wedding dress, and spends possibly as much again on shoes and bags in a year. Her estimated cost for clothing is £100,000.

HAIR EXTENSIONS
Julien Guyonnet created Cheryl's Sixties-inspired bouffant hair with 'Monofibre' acrylic fibre hair extensions.

Tall, French and dashing, Guyonnet has a new salon in Notting Hill.

He told me: 'Cheryl has wavy extensions to give her volume. She comes in once every three months for the extensions, and every six weeks for a tidy-up.'

The 'volumising' extensions take about four hours to attach. They cost from £375, but Cheryl's are thought to cost £750 because of her stylist's experience. G

uyonnet says Microfibre is better than human hair as the solvents used are less harsh and the hair is lighter.

He moved to London three years ago, after being a hairdresser in a salon on the Champs Elysees. Other celebrity clients include Peaches Geldof and Russell Brand.

The total cost of Cheryl's extensions is thought to be around £4,000 a year.

EXERCISE

Cheryl had a personal trainer earlier this year, along with the rest of Girls Aloud, and claimed: 'We'd all indulged a bit too much. I felt my love handles creeping back and my weight shot up, so I decided things had to change.

'As a group, we hired a personal trainer and went for it. I just wanted to be toned. So I'd go on the treadmill for 30 minutes and then do an hour of resistance work with weights. I still have a lot of work to do on my legs.'

She was sent a Hypoxi therapy bike as a gift from Harrods three years ago. The bike costs £36,000 and while pedalling the exerciser she is supposed to wear a high-waisted rubber skirt to help banish cellulite.

However, Cheryl's spokesman said she no longer uses the bike, nor has she kept on the £14,000-a-year personal trainer.

DIET
Cheryl denies using the services of a nutritionist and says she does not diet - although she barely eats carbohydrates like bread and pasta.

Since becoming famous, she has abandoned the takeaways she enjoyed when she was a waitress in Newcastle.

She is largely vegetarian and enjoys Japanese food because of its low fat and dairy content. Miso soup and edamame beans are in, and she likes shrimp and cod.

She says: 'If I start the day eating protein, I'll try not to eat carbohydrates, but I believe you should pig out once a week. I usually pig out on a Sunday because that's my hangover day.

'I was nine stone when I joined [Girls Aloud] and I'm eight stone now.'

After flashing a little more than she bargained for while adjusting her dress at the Harry Potter premiere, Emma Watson was back to her discreet best last night.

The 19-year-old actress was all blushes and giggles after she was grilled on U.S. television about the red carpet photo in which her underwear is on show.

Miss Watson, who endured torrential rain as she arrived at the opening of the sixth Potter film in London on Tuesday, described her blunder as a 'wardrobe malfunction' which she blamed on youthful inexperience.

The picture showed her adjusting the bottom half of her free-flowing vintage 1970s Ozzie Clark dress - and inadvertently putting her underwear on display.

'Tell us what's going on here,' said a deadpan Letterman as he put a copy of the picture on his desk.

'This was a small wardrobe malfunction that happens,' Miss Watson replied, giggling as she held her head in her hands.

These new shots are just the latest in a string of controversial photos featuring the young star.

In previous pictures posted on her MySpace social networking site, Miley has been seen in her underwear and offended Asian fans when she appeared to pull a 'slant-eye' pose.

Last year, Miley apologised and admitted she was 'embarrassed' over her topless pose for acclaimed photographer Annie Liebovitz in Vanity Fair magazine.

The teenager, who was 15 at the time, appeared to be topless as she pose with just a cream sheet across her chest.

The 20-year-old R&B singer avoided jail but will now be sentenced to 180 days of community labour in his home state of Virginia as punishment, his lawyer said.

Court drama: Rihanna prepared to testify against her former lover Chris Brown at the LA Superior Court, but was spared the ordeal when he pleaded guilty

Barbadian beauty Rihanna arrived at the courtroom dressed in black and wearing a pair of dark shades as she prepared to make her testimony.

She kept to a 'family room' adjacent to the court, but as it was announced that Brown had struck a plea bargain with prosecutors, it became clear that Rihanna would not have to take the stand.

Brown looked upset as he entered the courtroom with his lawyer Mark Geragos.

The guilty plea came before a preliminary hearing was scheduled to start.

The hearing had been billed for weeks as a public face-off between the pair, with Rihanna, 21, set to testify against her one-time boyfriend.

Instead, Brown averted the potentially damaging meeting by entering the plea that will subject him to probation for the next five years as well as force him to perform six months of community service.

Geragos said the plea represented the singer taking responsibility for his actions - which included beating, choking and biting Rihanna during a fight early on February 8, according to police.

After Brown left the courtroom, Rihanna entered and was addressed by Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Patricia Schnegg, who explained to the singer that she had issued a stay-away order.

Rihanna had not been seeking such an order, but the judge imposed one anyway.

The order requires that Brown and Rihanna stay at least 50 yards (45 metres) from each other, except at showbiz parties and events when the distance is reduced to 10 yards (nine metres).

The judge also told Rihanna it is not a one-way order - and that she, too, should not get any closer to Brown than the order allows.

'This is a kid who's never been in trouble before,' Geragos said after the hearing.

'He embraces this as a chance to get the message out that domestic violence will not be tolerated.
'He wants to get his life back on track.' Brown will be formally sentenced on August 5.

The judge accepted Brown's plea, but expressed some concerns because Brown is not a California resident.

She said he will most likely be allowed to do his service in his home state of Virginia, but she did not want him to spend his time at churches or community centres.

Instead, he was ordered to get his hands dirty by doing work equivalent to what he would do in California - cleaning up graffiti or roadside rubbish.

She also said he'd have to return to California every three months and attend domestic violence counselling.

Sandi Gibbons, a spokeswoman for the Los Angeles County district attorney's office, said the terms were in line with what others receive when they are charged with similar crimes and have no prior criminal history.

Brown spoke softly throughout the hearing as he waived his rights and told the judge he understood the gravity of his plea.

'I think it's commendable you took responsibility for your conduct,' Schnegg told Brown.

She said she hoped 'the terms and conditions of your probation will have some meaning.'

Rihanna spoke briefly, too, telling Schnegg she understood the terms of the stay-away order and that after Brown's sentencing she might ask for its terms to be loosened.

The star recorded one of 2007's most popular songs with Umbrella and has numerous other hits.
Her looks have made her a cover girl for magazines, as well as a pitchwoman for Cover Girl cosmetics.

The deal provides an end to a case that sparked intense media interest and severe backlash against Brown.

Sponsors and radio stations dropped him, and the singer had to cancel several high-profile appearances, including a performance at the Grammys.

The case stems from a bust-up between the former couple hours before they were to appear at the 2009 Grammy Awards.

After the pair left Clive Davis's pre-Grammy party in Brown's silver Lamborghini a row ensued and he pulled over at the side of a street in a quiet Los Angeles neighbourhood.

Rihanna was then believed to have snatched the car keys from him and thrown them out the window, sending him into a rage.

Reports say Brown got out the car to look for the keys, then came back to the car, put his hands around Rihanna's neck and said: 'I'm going to kill you!'

According to a source, the Disturbia singer told police that she lost consciousness, and when she awoke, Brown had fled the scene.

Leaked police pictures showed her right eye blackened and badly swollen and she had scratches and bruising on her arms.

Intense media coverage led to Rihanna being identified as Brown's victim mere hours after the attack.

Within weeks, a photo of the singer and model's bruised and battered face was posted on celebrity gossip site TMZ.

The posting sparked an investigation by the Los Angeles Police Department into whether one of its own officers leaked the photo to the Web site.

Brown's attorney unsuccessfully argued the leak hurt Brown and that he should be granted access to LAPD's investigative files.

Brown recently proclaimed in a video posted to YouTube that he was 'not a monster.'

Even after the hearing, lawyers for Brown and Rihanna refused to discuss the status of the pair's relationship.

But on the eve of this year’s tournament, the BBC Radio 5 Live commentator has caused outrage among the sport’s female stars by claiming their role is as much about ‘selling sex’ on court as it is about their sporting prowess.

Stich, the 1991 men’s singles champion, made his politically incorrect comments last night as he waded into the argument over the loud grunting of many of the game’s top women.

The Apprentice winner Yasmina Siadatan has finally lifted the lid on her love-life and revealed that she met her sweetheart when she was just four years old.

Yasmina lived on the same street in Reading, Berkshire as her boyfriend Jack Patey, 27.

The families moved away, but in a a stunning coincidence when they up sticks again, they ended up living on the same street, aged 11, and their relationship grew out of a close friendship.

He said: 'From the day Yasmina told me she was applying, I knew that she’d win. Absolutely.

'Knowing her like I do, and having watched the show, it would have been a travesty, in my opinion, if she hadn’t won.”

Yasmina added: 'When I first met all the other candidates, I thought, "Yeah, I’m in with a good chance."'

She also dismissed suggestions that she and runner-up Kate Walsh were fierce rivals.

'We’re extremely good friends, ridiculously so. I’ve got a lot of respect for her. We have this thing called the Monday night club, when we get together and do something fun.

No one is happier than Lorna Bliss that superstar Britney Spears's 'train wreck' incarnation is at an end.

For it is no laughing matter when your livelihood as a ' lookalike' depends on impersonating a celebrity who seems hell-bent on self-destruction.

No, not funny at all when, having invested £135,000 over the past ten years on sexy costumes, fishnets, dance routines, choreographers, make-up and blonde hair extensions, Britney goes and shaves her head and piles on the pounds in full meltdown mode.

Today, back-to-blonde Britney, 27, may be staging the biggest comeback since Lazarus with her sell-out Circus world tour, but two years ago it was a different story.

She lost custody of her sons to ex-husband Kevin Federline as her behaviour veered out of control with a police siege, clashes with the paparazzi and an apparent nervous breakdown.

That wasn't quite what Lorna had envisaged when she first donned a sexy schoolgirl outfit and thigh-high socks to belt out Britney's debut No.1, Baby One More Time. But when your life is devoted to 'being Britney' you have to take the rough with the smooth.

'It is definitely a relief Britney's back to her best,' says 28-year-old Lorna from Cambridge, who calls herself The UK's Number 1 Britney Impersonator.

'That was a very tough time. She received so much flak it made me cry.

'When she shaved her hair off, my mum, Carmen, said: "You're not going to do that, are you?" and I said: "Oh no, no." But it's my job to do what Britney does, and I've been impersonating her for so long, I feel there's almost a spiritual connection between us.

'So, just like Britney, I took a pair of hair clippers and shaved my head right down the middle. When I saw the first bald strip in the mirror I wanted to stop because it looked so awful, but I had to continue until it was all gone. My mum cried when she saw it.

'I felt so unfeminine and unattractive and it made me realise how terrible Britney must have been feeling to do something so drastic.

'When I was booked for jobs, people expected me to be exactly like Britney, so I'd have to act like a train wreck, too, which was very hard. But it made me have a lot of sympathy for her and what she was going through.'

As a lookalike, these were lean times for Lorna and she admits she even considered giving it up. After all, there is not much call for a bald superstar with 'issues' - although Lorna gave it her best, growling at photographers and running at them with an umbrella, just like her heroine.

What a bizarre life Lorna Bliss leads. Earning around £45,000 a year as a Britney impersonator, for her it's not just a day job but a way of life. She lives, breathes, eats and sleeps Britney.

'I wanted to become an actor and singer,' says Lorna, the daughter of a civil servant, who studied Performing Arts at university. 'But I'm nowhere near as talented a singer as Britney, so I'm happy to impersonate her and enjoy the adulation she receives.'

It was in 1998, when Britney released Baby One More Time, that Lorna's friends started remarking on her resemblance to the American star.

The following year she saw two adverts for lookalike agencies and sent in some photos, thinking it would be an easy way to make some cash.

Lorna signed up with Entertainment 2000, who paid for a singing coach and choreographers to help her sing, speak and dance like the star, and she borrowed £5,000 from her parents to buy outfits and have her hair dyed.

For a year, she toured UK nightclubs as a tribute act called Great Britney, performing three nights a week for a paltry £100 a night.

When Lorna finished her degree in May 2000, she started working for the agency full-time, performing at birthday parties, business functions and nightclubs.

And although she earns around £45,000, a third of that goes on maintaining her look.

'My outfits are made-to-measure, costing up to £500. Each month I spend £500 on my hair, £80 on waxing and £60 on getting my eyebrows plucked and tinted.'

What she saved in beauty treatments when Britney went into meltdown, she lost with the drop in bookings. These are now back-up since Britney's revival.

'Whatever Britney does, I do, and sometimes it's very hard when she loses weight and I have to go on a diet,' says Lorna. 'When Britney gained weight a few years ago, I started eating more and exercising less.

'When she started the Circus tour, I guessed she was a size 8 and I was a 12. So I started working out, cut out carbohydrates and lost a stone in three weeks.'

It took months, however, for Lorna's hair to grow back and once it was long enough, she had extensions put in.

Lorna is now planning to spend £500 copying Britney's nine tattoos, including a fairy on her lower back, dice on her left wrist and Kabbalah symbols on her neck.

'Although I'm worried about the pain, I can't wait to have them. I'm also planning to get a miniterrier like Britney, called London,' says Lorna.

There is nothing she won't do in her quest to be the best Britney impersonator ever (there are about 18 worldwide and Lorna says she was thrilled when she got a personal mention on Britney's official website).

'It's a fantastic job. I travel all over the world and I have people chasing me for autographs. The most glamorous job I did was appearing on TV in Nepal for New Year's Eve. I had a massive hotel suite, and the staff treated me as if I really were Britney,' says Lorna, who charges between £500 and £1,000 a performance.

'I very rarely have a day off as Britney and sometimes you do feel a bit of a freak, living someone else's life as if it's your own, but it's been really exciting.'

Like Britney, Lorna's love life has been chequered, with her stage persona rather frightening off men. But for 18 months she's been dating Los Angeles-based Johnny Depp lookalike Danny Lopez, 45, whom she met on a TV show.

Surely, she must dream of doing another job or having the freedom just to be herself? Apparently not.

'I can't envisage myself stopping ever,' Lorna says. 'I've never met Britney, but I think she is a very sweet-natured, genuine person. I'm happy that she seems so much healthier, and it feels as if her life really is mine.'

Even so, Lorna must be hoping - given her incredible investment in Britney - that the singer's next incarnation won't hold any nasty surprises.

The 30-year-old, who is dating Formula One champion Lewis Hamilton, turned heads in a multi-coloured bikini as she soaked up the sun on Waikiki Beach.

Nicole was all smiles as she sun-bathed with bandmate Ashley Roberts and ran along the beach before the group took to the stage in Honolulu.

The race comes at the end of a difficult season for Lewis who has been playing second fiddle to fellow Brit Jensen Button in this year's Formula 1 Championship, and hasn't managed to win a single race.

While Lewis was missing from Nicole's beach jaunt, onlookers would no doubt have been surprised to see her enjoying the company of bandmate Ashley after months of rumoured conflict within the group.

It is believed Nicole is planning to leave the Pussycat Dolls to focus on her solo career and finally release her long-delayed debut album My Name Is Nicole.

Several songs from the album, which was originally scheduled for release two years ago, ended up on the Doll Domination album last year.

Melody, who often has her own solo segment in the Dolls' previous singles, made her feelings known on stage in her native Phoenix, Arizona in April, when the group were supporting Britney Spears.

As each Doll introduced herself, Melody said: 'I want to give a shout out to my family. Thank you for supporting me...even though I'm not featured.

'Don't give up on your dreams. Don't let anybody stop you - ever.'

After her on-stage outburst, she was given an enthusiastic high-five by redhead Jessica.

Writing on her Twitter micro-blogging page, Melody later said: 'You don't have to take the advice, but to all those who wish to be in the industry, don't sacrifice your integrity. Takes longer, worth the wait.

'Its so funny to me sometimes how nuts people in the music industry are.

'I will maintain by remaining the same, you will just wear yourself out.'

The split comes amid allegations yesterday that Caroline, 29, once enjoyed a hot tub session with reality TV’s Jack Osbourne, son of Ozzy and Sharon, and another girl, at his Los Angeles home.

They are supposed to be the brightest and the best we have to offer, but yesterday Cambridge students showed they were also some of our biggest drinkers.

The university's notorious end-of-exams 'Suicide Sunday' party lived up to its reputation with a series of alcohol-fuelled garden parties across the city hosted by its drinking societies.

One female student had to be helped by a friend after she appeared to collapse unconscious at the side of a road outside Magdalene College's 'Gentlemen's Wyverns' event.

The drinking club was forced to relocate their party from college grounds for the first time in 80 years after a woman student was arrested for punching a spectator during 2008's all-female jelly wrestling competition.

Hundreds of students were bussed to Anstey Hall, a restored 17th-century manor house five miles from the city centre.

Extra security and police were also drafted in to patrol the party, while other college celebrations were cancelled.

Despite the new venue the end-of-exams celebration followed the same format with a blazers and bikini theme, riotous drinking games and plenty of vomiting.

'The way the students were behaving was absolutely disgusting,' said one passer-by. 'It was only midday on Sunday and there were lots of families and young people around enjoying the sunshine.

'The students were lying across the verges, lots of them were vomiting and they were singing rowdy drinking songs.

'I understand they want to celebrate the end of their exams but they were completely out of control.'
The Wyverns' party kicked off at 11am and after just an hour many graduates had drunk themselves into oblivion.

'The Wyverns aren't popular with the university officials and after last year's arrest they didn't want anything to do with the party,' said one student, from Magdalene College.

'We were told the party would have to be held away from college grounds. But hundreds of people have still turned up and this year has been bigger and better than ever.'

The highlight of the day was the jelly wrestling contest, with hundreds gathering to watch bikini-clad female students battle it out for a £250 prize.

The party-goers shouted and cheered as the girls hurled jelly at each other in an inflatable paddling pool.

'It was a very hot day and some students drank far too much,' said one graduate, from Trinity College, who did not want to be named.

'The event involves lots of drinking games and you soon lose track of how much you've drunk.

'A lot of people could hardly walk by the end of it.'

Many students later moved onto garden parties hosted by other drinking societies including the Squires of Gonville and Caius and the Trinity Hall Crescents, who are the only ones still allowed to host their celebrations on college property.

Between the parties lots of students faced gruelling initiations such as drinking a non-alcoholic beverage through a fish smeared in marmite and licking cream off a half-dressed stranger.

One student was taken to Addenbrooke's Hospital with a broken ankle midway through his initiation which involved tackling a university under-20 rugby player.

Another fresher was taken to hospital after falling down a flight of stairs.

The Newnham Nuns' garden party was cancelled by the college and many students have been forced to hold initiations in secret.

Natasha Wear, president of the Newnham Nuns, said: 'The college needed to be seen to be doing something to combat the problem of binge drinking.

'Our garden party was fully organised but the college wouldn't let it go ahead.

'They cancelled the party as a punishment for the bad press we have had in the past.'

Last year classics student Nadia Witkowski, 23, was given a caution for common assault after losing the jelly wrestling contest at the Wyverns party and punching a female spectator.

The Wyverns drinking society has a reputation for its hard partying and excessive drinking.

Its initiation ceremony involves eating a 15-course meal with delicacies such as a pig's snout with wasabi sauce and a pint of water with a goldfish swimming inside.

This year's ceremony featured raw leeks, whole uncooked squid and entire chillis.

The four prospective members then had kippers put round their necks and had to down four pints in three minutes each containing food, spices and other foreign liquids.

Police said there were no arrests.

The drunken parties come just a day after a senior bishop has criticised middle-class drinkers who binge on alcohol.

The Rt Rev John Gladwin, the Bishop of Chelmsford, said it was the more affluent members of society who were behind the rise in alcoholism and claimed they were just as irresponsible as drunken youths roaming the streets.

He told a Sunday newspaper: 'While we do have a significant problem among young people, not least the binge drinking that breaks out onto our streets, that is not the issue. Growing prosperity is behind the rise in alcoholism.

'Often poorer people in society haven't got the protection - the safety of jobs and homes - so when young people do go out clubbing it's all very public, whereas for older people you can collapse at home at the weekend and have levels of alcohol consumption that are just as bad.

'People in the middle-classes have got into habits of high levels of alcohol consumption without thinking through the implications for the whole community. They can't turn around and complain about another generation who, with cheap alcohol and easy access to it, are doing the same but more publicly.'

An NHS report released last month showed one in four adults in England are now classed as "hazardous" drinkers.

The cost of alcohol-related harm to the NHS in England is £2.7 billion and rising.

Picture the scene. It's Sunday morning and behind the cream walls of Clarence House there's a bit of light-hearted nosy-parkering going on.

Who, they are asking in the corridors and kitchens, did Harry bring home this time?

It's hardly going to be Chelsy Davy - Harry might still be in touch with his ex, but they're not that close.

The name Astrid Harbord is bandied around: a couple of months ago, Harry arrived home at 3am with the blonde in tow, but the word is that there's absolutely nothing going on there - he was just looking after a friend who was slightly unsteady on her feet at the end of a long night.

That's certainly not the situation with the young woman now waking up in an unfamiliar bed in the Prince's apartment, asking what's for breakfast and wondering exactly how a royal fry-up might be served.

Caroline Flack was introduced to Harry by mutual friends at a poker tournament in London in April and the chemistry was immediate.

Their giggly chat was followed up over the next few days with a series of flirty texts in which Caroline teased the Prince and he joked about being useless at cards.

The friendship continued apace. 'They have a lot of mutual friends, including Natalie Pinkham, and are out and about on the same social circuit when Harry is in London,' says a friend.

Natalie is another dark-haired TV presenter, who looks uncannily like Caroline, and was once photographed with Prince Harry jokily grabbing her breast.

Another friend adds: 'They have certainly been texting each other a lot of late. Harry thinks Caroline is cute and the feeling is mutual.'

Last Saturday, after a trip to the Shepherd's Bush Empire in West London to see singer-songwriter Billy Franks, Harry headed to the nearby Troubadour nightspot on the Fulham Road to meet up with Miss Flack.

At 4am when the Prince's people carrier, driven by one of his Scotland Yard bodyguards, finally zipped through the gates of Clarence House, Harry was not alone on the back seat - gorgeous Miss Flack was sitting beside him.

On paper, 'Flack', as she's known to her friends, isn't the most obvious of matches for a Prince - a comprehensive educated TV presenter.

Very different from Chelsy who comes from a wealthy family in her own right and loves her 'Afro-trash' lifestyle in Cape Town.

But what is Harry's relationship with Chelsy at the moment?

While it would be wrong to portray them as star-crossed lovers - Chelsy has been seen on the arm of a new man, property developer Dan Philipson - they are still fond of each other and have secretly met on several occasions since their highly public split earlier this year.

On one occasion, Harry wore a ridiculous-black wig to disguise himself when they went to a South London rave.

They couple were also due to see each other last night at a drinks party to raise funds for Harry's charity, Sentebale, in London's Pall Mall organised by his best friend, Tom 'Skippy' Inskip.

The problem, though, for Harry is that Chelsy hates the fuss that comes with dating the third in line to the throne.

And while it is far too early to say whether Caroline Flack will turn out to be the new Chelsy, she certainly seems to be the strongest contender for the vacancy since the split.

But the differences are striking. For a start, at 29 she's five years older than Harry, who won't be 25 until September.

Then there's her career. At least, unlike many of the girls who surround William and Harry, she has one and isn't afraid to work. But it doesn't quite fit the Windsor preference for low profile discretion.

'I work in telly!' as she puts it on the profile on her myspace page.

The brunette is perhaps best known for replacing Kirsty Gallacher as the host on Sky One's Gladiators, though she's also been a big hit on the BBC children's show TMi and played Michael Jackson's long-suffering girlfriend Bubbles in Bo' Selecta!

And that's not forgetting the photoshoots she's done with two men's magazines, one of which, alongside pictures of her prancing around in T-shirt and pants, called her 'TV's new saucepot' and noted that she is 'bubblier than a fresh pint of Foster's top'.

'I don't usually get pictured in my knickers, but I eased into it and by the end of the day I was running around being silly,' she said in the accompanying interview.

She went on to chat about her drinking habits. 'I'm sick if I have shots, so they're out the window.

'I like spasbombs though - Morgan's Spice [a brand of rum] dropped into Red Bull. Me and my friends like downing them.

'For someone so small, I can drink quite a lot.' So it's not difficult to spot what Harry sees in her then.

'Flack's really hot,' says a friend, with just a slight air of envy. 'And he's a Prince. So it's not exactly that much of a surprise that something's happening. There's quite a spark between them.'

What is a surprise is that the couple haven't really bothered about keeping their liaison quiet.

That's not to say they've been entirely open. Caroline refers to Harry by the codeword 'jam' - 'because he's got jam-coloured hair and he's really sweet,' she tells friends - and even posted a message on her Facebook site saying: 'Caroline Flack: Love jam...x'

And, in keeping with her exuberant character, the whole thing has an air of casual excitement.

Caroline and her twin sister Jody were born on November 9, 1979, at Chase Farm Hospital in North London to Ian, then a pastry cook, and Christine Flack.

Her first home backed onto Tottenham Hotspur football ground - which explains why she's an ardent Spurs fan - but the family soon moved to Norfolk.

While the upper-middle-class girls with double-barrelled surnames with whom Harry is usually linked were at boarding school and hanging around county estates and polo grounds, Caroline Flack was growing up near Thetford, in Norfolk, where she attended the local comprehensive, Wayland High School, getting involved in plays and pantomimes.

'She was always a bright and lively girl, very popular and capable,' says one of her former teachers, Mike Tynan.

'Her passion at school was dance and she stood out, even at an early age. She came back last July and gave a talk at prize-giving day.

'She spent a lot of time speaking to students and signing autographs. She was always engaging and that hasn't changed. The school's proud of her.'

Caroline went on to study drama and dance at stage school in Cambridge, moved to London at 21 and began to pick up acting work in commercials.

Before the TV work kicked in, she wasn't afraid to get her hands dirty, at one point working in a meatpacking factory.

'I loved it, though in the end I had to give it up,' she says. 'People wouldn't come near me because I reeked of pork.'

Then in 2002 she got her first big break when she began presenting the International Pepsi Chart Show.

Like his brother, Harry has surrounded himself with friends made up of the sons and daughters of gentry, Army officers and public-school types.

In contrast to William, however, the high-spirited Prince isn't afraid to let his hair down in public and was recently seen leaving yet another London nightspot sporting pink nail polish after allowing a female friend to paint his nails as a joke.

Harry is attracted to Caroline's sense of fun and naughty sense of humour. This is, after all, the girl who says she relishes doing children's TV because: 'You can come up with any silly idea and no one will care.

'If you say, "I want to dress as a banana" they make it happen. I dress up as a badger on a regular basis.'

She giggles that her most embarrassing moment came as she took a shower backstage at the V Festival when Taylor Hawkins from the Foo Fighters walked in unexpectedly.

'We just had a little chat. He asked how the shower was, I said it was fine. . .'

She's also cheekily street smart. Interviewing John Leslie the day after the Abi Titmuss sex tape came out, she asked him: 'I hear you used to be a goalkeeper. Are you very good with your hands?'

Clarence House would have been quite a contrast to the small flat in Crouch End, North London, she shares with a female friend. And she isn't exactly a hunting and fishing girl.

On her internet networking site she describes herself as 'lightweight, scruffy, very messy' and lists her interests as: 'Going out for drinks and eating jerk chicken burgers in Banners.

Watching films in bed. . . Reading the papers. Watching the news. Eating pancakes in Pick More Daises. My little flat. Buying old rock and roll love songs on vinyl. Staying in.'

And Harry, with his Pink's shirts and slip-on shoes, is quite a departure from the men she usually dates.

He may be spending every scrap of time available (most weekends) partying in London, but he's also based with the Army Air Corps at RAF Shawbury in Shropshire training to become an attack helicopter pilot.

Caroline's last serious boyfriend was a musician who goes by the name of 'Dave Danger'.

After they split up, she was seen leaving the NME music awards' backstage party with Luke Pritchard of the Kooks.

She's also talked about being 'turned to putty' by Anthony Kiedis, the tattooed vocalist of the Red Hot Chilli Peppers, who has battled heroin addiction.

It's hard to imagine anyone more different to an aristocratic Sandhurst boy.

But maybe that's what Harry finds so beguiling about Caroline who is a fun-loving, unpretentious girl more than capable of keeping up with his party lifestyle.

Police are so overstretched guarding jet-setting young royals that senior members of the family are being put at risk , it was revealed yesterday.

Metropolitan Police Commissioner Sir Paul Stephenson has asked the Home Secretary for an urgent increase in funds to pay for more protection officers.

Senior officers say ministers should be given an 'ultimatum' - come up with more cash or reduce the number of royals with 24-hour protection.

They say Scotland Yard's resources have been pushed to breaking point as a new generation of royals travel the world and lead full social lives.

There has been intense scrutiny of the need to police the gap years of Princess Beatrice and her sister Eugenie, at an estimated cost of £250,000 each.

The royalty protection squad, known as SO14, also has to provide high-level security around Princes William and Harry.

The funding issue came to a head over reports that 19-year-old Eugenie, sixth in line to the throne, is considering applying to a U.S. university where she could have two specialist officers constantly by her side - at phenomenal expense.

It was the first time in ten years that royal protection officers have stopped a direct threat.

Critics, however, say it was Eugenie's personal decision to go backpacking around the world and she was not targeted because she was a Royal.

The tight security round Prince Andrew's daughters is in marked contrast to the protection provided to Princess Anne's daughter Zara.

Though she is a professional horsewoman with a higher profile than her cousins, neither she nor her brother Peter are routinely guarded.

Dai Davies, former head of SO14, said: 'This shows the need for a root and branch review.

'A risk assessment should be undertaken of all those members of the Royal Family who receive round-the- clock protection to decide whether there is any active threat to them.

'If there is not, questions should be asked as to whether they should still be afforded the same level of protection.

'If there is deemed to be a threat then certain members of royalty - particularly the younger ones - should look at their behaviour and temper it.

'It is very difficult to justify paying for officers to shadow them, travelling around the world and partying in nightclubs until the early hours of the morning, when we cannot even afford to send our armed forces to Iraq and Afghanistan with the full equipment.'

There is also concern for the health of officers struggling to keep pace with the Royals.

They can work up to 70 hours a week, particularly on foreign trips.

Officers also have to be relieved after two weeks, leading to regular staff changes during the extended jaunts of young Royals.

The guards who travel with Royals both in the UK and abroad have to be highly trained in personal protection.

They tend to travel in business class and stay in upmarket hotels and can claim up to £150 a day in subsistence allowances while abroad.

The cost of sending two officers - at the rank of inspector or sergeant - on a six-week trip would about £50,000, including flights, accommodation, expenses and overtime.

The funding crisis was laid bare after it emerged that Sir Paul has made a formal request to the Government for more cash during a review of how taxpayers' money is spent on protection duties.

He acted after an internal police audit raised fears about funding deficiencies for the force's royal and specialist protection units.

Auditors said the formula for calculating how much the force receives does not take into account the true burden of its responsibilities protecting the Royals and other VIPs.

The Met has asked for funding for up to 150 extra protection officers. It has already stepped up recruitment but the financial issues have yet to be resolved.

Police forces across England and Wales receive extra funding for dedicated security posts every year.

Official figures show the cost has been rising steadily. In 2003, the last year for which figures are available, the national bill was £203million.

The annual protection bill for the Royal Family alone is estimated at £50million. Most of it is spent on salaries and overtime for round-the-clock armed guards at Royal homes as well as hi-tech security measures.

The 400-strong Royal Protection Squad is responsible for guarding about 20 members of the Royal Family and their various homes.

They include the Queen's cousin Princess Alexandra, who carries out only 120 engagements a year and lives in a vast house in Richmond Park which is afforded 24-hour protection.

The Duchess of Cornwall's home in Wiltshire, which she kept after marrying Prince Charles and where she spends a few days a week, is also policed round-the-clock at a cost of about £1million a year.

The squad's additional duties include protecting members of the public who visit Royal residences and providing personal protection for European royal families visiting the UK.

A Whitehall source confirmed that a letter had been received from the Met and said new Home Secretary Alan Johnson's officials would 'respond in due course'.

The Home Office said it did not comment on operational security matters.

Representatives for the Miss California USA organisation have confirmed that Carrie has been fired from her position.

Runner-up, Miss Malibu Tami Farrell, will now take Prejean's crown as the new Miss California.

Last night, organisers were stressing that the firing was solely due to her lack of work ethic - not because of her controversial views.

'This was a decision based solely on contract violations including Ms Prejean's unwillingness to make appearances on behalf of the Miss California USA organisation,' Miss California USA Executive Director Keith Lewis said in a statement.

'After our press conference in New York we had hoped we would be able to forge a better working relationship.'

'Unfortunately it just doesn't look like it is going to happen and I offered Keith my full support in making this decision.'

Miss Prejean, from San Diego, sparked controversy during the Miss USA pageant, in which she explained to judge Perez Hilton that she didn't believe in gay marriage.

Her controversial views were backed by the majority of Californians however - who, last month, voted to ban gay marriage - a move that has caused outrage across the gay-rights movement.

However it seems Tami Farrell had wised up to the consequences of commenting on the divisive issue when asked for her views on chat show Larry King Live last night.

When asked whether each US state should legalise same-sex marriage, stunning Tami, 24, who was runner-up to Prejean as Miss California, avoided giving a straight answer.

Instead, she urged the world to 'move on' and stop 'looking to beauty queens for the answer'.

She told host Larry King: 'Honestly I think it's a personal decision and I think it's a civil rights issue and it's something that we should let each state decide.

'I think it's silly with all this controversy right now that the world is looking to beauty queens for the answer, that's my honest opinion'

When asked pointedly how, as a California voter, she would vote on the issue, she batted the question back to Larry King.

Under pressure to respond, she then replied: 'My thing is I just think with all of the controversy that's been going on I want to start clean and move forward.

'There are so many other amazing organisations and so many great things we can champion here.

'Just like everyone else in the world I think this has dragged on for so long, I think let's move forward and start clean.'

She also insisted that she has not breached her contract and spoken of her shock at being replaced.
